Atlanta Braves News
The offseason for the Atlanta Braves began with a bang with the additions of Josh Donaldson and Brian McCann. However, it has now hit a lull with Christmas just four days away with no further moves having been made. Make no mistake, more moves are coming and we will all probably be surprised when they happen.
We don’t know how much money Atlanta is planning to spend on payroll for the 2019 season but we do know how much they have spent so far. If you compare their 2019 commitments to their ending payroll in 2018 then you see a gap of about $21 million remaining.
It is never too early for a mock draft and Baseball America’s latest offering has the Braves going after a pair of pitchers with their two early picks.
Anibal Sanchez will be staying in the NL East, it just won’t be as a member of the Atlanta Braves. Sanchez agreed to a two-year, $19 million deal on Thursday that includes a club option for a third season as well as incentives would could bring the total value to $33 million.
Manny Machado’s free-agent tour continued on Thursday with a stop in Philadelphia. Machado also visited the White Sox and the Yankees this week. Still no word on when he might reach a decision on where he will be playing next season.
Free agent right-hander Trevor Cahill will join Matt Harvey with the Los Angeles Angels. Both sides struck an agreement on a one-year, $9 million deal that also includes up to $1.5 million in incentives. Cahill put up a 3.76 ERA in 110 innings last year for Oakland.
The Colorado Rockies and free-agent second baseman Daniel Murphy agreed on a two-year, $24 million deal on Thursday that also includes a mutual option for the 2021 season.
Veteran reliever Joakim Soria is headed to Oakland after agreeing to a two-year deal that is worth a reported $15 million.
It also looks like Andrew Miller is close to coming off the board as reports indicate that he is close to signing a multi-year deal with the St. Louis Cardinals.
